Assassin bug

Gminatus australis

Description:

24mm long; orange and black assassin bug; black legs, head, antennae, spines on 'shoulders'; antennae about same length as the animal.

Habitat:

On Eucalyptus ovata in suburban back yard.

Notes:

Same species as martinl's of about a week ago. Assassin bugs have toxic saliva. This kills the prey upon which they then feed by sucking out the body contents. They usually prefer soft bodied insects such as caterpillars.
