Description:

The polyphemus moth is a North American member of the family Saturniidae, the giant silk moths. It is a tan-colored moth, with an average wingspan of 15 cm. The most notable feature of the moth is its large, purplish eyespots on its two hind wings.

Habitat:

Deciduous woods.

Notes:

Was on the ground in the leaves, not sure if it was new and pumping up it wings or had been battered by the high winds. One, right, antenna was missing.
