Description:

Male First, Female Second The Pyrrhuloxia or Desert Cardinal is a medium-sized North American song bird found in the American southwest and northern Mexico.

Notes:

Call is very similar to that of the cardinal, just slower and more drawn out - Think Drunk Cardinal and you have the call.

Thanks guys! I am glad you are enjoying this desert cardinal. This bird is extremely common in Big Bend National Park. You could imagine it being as common as northern cardinals else where in the US. However their range is fairly decent and these beauties can be seen in a wide variety of habitat it seems, including the tropics of Esterro Lano Grande State Park in South Texas.

Very interesting explanations. This male Pyrrhuloxia is not as flashy as Northern cardinals. May be they are more polite and gentle... ;-)
