Hawaiian stilt

Himantopus mexicanus knudseni

Description:

Wading birds 12-15 inches tall with black top and white underside, long, slender reddish-pink legs, black eyes and long slender black beak.

Habitat:

Insular tropical wetlands.

Notes:

Spotted on a mowed and manicured football pitch at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex. There were about a half dozen individuals present, but not clustered together. The Hawaiian stilt is an endangered subspecies of the Black-necked stilt.
