Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

What I believe to be a young, female Red-bellied Woodpecker coming to eat on an orange

Habitat:

Feeder trees in our front yard next to a lake and within a seven mile radius of wetlands, farmlands, woodlands, prairie fields and the Otter Tail River

Notes:

We've had Red-bellied Woodpeckers coming to our feeder trees for many years now for: oranges, peanuts, sunflower seeds and beef suet. There here year round and bring their young to our feeder trees as well. I first started putting out oranges for our Baltimore Orioles but was pleased to see other wildlife enjoying them as well: Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Finches, Squirrels, Chipmunks and even butterflies

Maria dB-Thank you! Taken over three years ago when I was still learning about them. I wish I'd taken more of the young birds that were coming to our yard this year as it was a very large gathering compared to other years. :-)
