Pine Siskin

Spinus pinus

Description:

Flocks of tiny Pine Siskins may monopolize your thistle feeder one winter and be absent the next. This nomadic finch ranges widely and erratically across the continent each winter in response to seed crops. Better suited to clinging to branch tips than to hopping along the ground, these brown-streaked acrobats flash yellow wing markings as they flutter while feeding or as they explode into flight. Flocks are gregarious, and you may hear their insistent wheezy twitters before you see them.

Habitat:

Backyard thistle feeder, surrounded by conifers

Notes:

This has been a very big year for Pine Siskins in our county, along with some of the other more Northerly species dependent on conifers. We are seeing much greater numbers of these species, than we have in many years.

This year was the first time I had ever seen them. It started out with 1, then 2, then 10, next thing I knew there were over 70 and my feeders were empty! They have been gone for over 2 months now. Hope to see them again.
