Canada Goose

Branta canadensis

Description:

A large and long-necked goose; legs and bill black. Adult: black neck and head with a contrasting white cheek patch. Body brown, paler below, often darker on rear flanks. Belly and vent white. Flight: brown above including wings, lower back blackish, as is the tail, both contrasting strongly with a white rump band.

Habitat:

The most familiar and widespread goose in North America, the Canada Goose can be found in all kinds of water all across the continent, from the tundra to the Gulf Coast. Some populations have become resident in urban areas, and are now coming into conflict with people. Their habitat preference includes ponds, lakes, rivers, grainfields, fresh and saltwater marshes.

Notes:

Couldn't stand staying inside this morning - regardless of the rain that was coming down over here. Headed out to Lake Piru, Ca for a short hike and saw a small group/flock of geese land while I was on the farthest section of the lake.
