A butterfly in the Family: Nymphalidae. The wingspan ranges from 1.75 to 2.50 inches (4.4 to 6.4 cm). Orange, black and white markings. Dorsal view (pic 4). Ventral view (pics 5 and 6). They have compound eyes (seen in pic 6) and have color vision in the 440–590 nm range of the visible spectrum which includes indigo, blue, green, and yellow.
Spotted feeding on thistle at the Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. Moist dry creek bed with lots of thistle and yarrow.
Found thru out much the world.
