Purple Sea Urchin

Strongylocentrotus purpuratus

Description:

The purple sea urchin is deep purple in color and covered with 1 inch spines. It normally grows to a diameter of about 4 inches and may live as long as 70 years.

Habitat:

The purple sea urchin lives along the eastern edge of the Pacific Ocean extending from Ensenada, Mexico to British Columbia, Canada. This sea urchin species lives in lower intertidal and nearshore subtidal communities.

Notes:

By gently lifting from the underside you can lift them off the rocks without being stabbed by the spines.
