Every time I've come across this fungus it seems to be on dead wood. I've seen it in down branches (like here) and also on decaying 8x8 wood beams used to border a garden. It is a dark brown shelf mushroom with a highly textured top surface (fuzzy or prickly).
Thanks Alan, that helped a great deal. Found several pictures on line of Hexagonia hydnoides taken in my area.
