Carolina Grasshopper

Description:

Large grasshopper, only slightly mottled. Overall color varies from beige to brown, red, or gray. Hind wings jet black with yellow or white border, visible when the insect flies.

Habitat:

Found in a dry, open field along a roadside and a riparian corridor. A typical urban "waste place."

Notes:

This is a common species in summer and fall. It is very wary and usually difficult to approach closely without flying off.
