Possibly yellow stripe cutworm, Spodoptera ornithogalli?
Nancy, I think you are on the right track. I haven't found an exact match yet but there are some strong similarities to some of the Armyworms. There also seems to be some variation in coloration in some of the species. Maybe submit to Bugguide for ID.
