Black Cormorant

Phalacrocorax carbo

Description:

Large black bird with white bill, and yellow/white throat. Stands about 75cm tall. Large webbed feet - legs and feet are black.

Habitat:

I see them a lot around the rocky coastline to the south of Sydney, where they fly high above the waves, and then dive down, plunging into the water to catch fish swimming too close to the surface. After their meal, they will sit on rocks in the sunshine and breeze, and spread their wings to dry off.

Notes:

Also known as Great Cormorant, Great Black Cormorant, Large Black Cormorant, and Black Shag - depending where in the world you come from. These are not unique to Australia.
