Northern Hawk-owl

Surnia ulula

Description:

A unique owl with a long tail and squarish head. Barred underbelly, back, and tail. "Hawk-like" face is square, with dark facial markings. Yellow eyes; white brows.

Habitat:

Open dry/wet fields with mixed bushes and shrubs and isolated tall trees.

Notes:

Likes to perch at the tip of branches. Hopped down the tree with a somewhat ungainly flight (getting snagged on branches) when a Bald Eagle flew past.
