Atlantic Brown Pelican, nonbreeding adult

Pelecanus occidentalis

Description:

Large, distinctive looking bird. Heavy bodied with a very long bill and large throat pouch. Short legs with webbed feet. Gray/brown body with a darker brown belly. White neck and head with some yellowish on the head. Mostly pale bill with a dark throat.

Habitat:

Man-made, freshwater lagoon.

Notes:

Hanging out between a couple of lagoons with an assortment of other birds (Anhinga, Snowy Egret and Great Blue Heron, see picture 6). There were also American White Ibis and Double-crested Cormorant resting at this area at the same time.
