Odontaenuis disjunctus
Shiny black beetle with ridges on it's wings. A single horn between it's eye's. Orange legs.
Found walking across the ground in front of my workshop. They spend most of their lives in rotting wood.
Adults carve galleries in rotting logs. They eat the wood and expel their frass which is fed upon by bacteria and fungi. The beetle then consumes their own frass which is now more digestible. The larvae, pupa and young adults share the same galleries. The larvae feed on the frass of the adults. The young adults are red gradually turning black. The young adults disperse by flying. The only time they use their wings.
