Spotting

Description:

I found what appeared to be a smiley face in the mud; grass or young reeds were growing on top. Perhaps crabs or snails are responsible?

Habitat:

Seen on the border of a Northern Pacific tidepool.

Notes:

The photos were taken with a zoom lens, because the spot was inaccessible without treading through water. I also used flash in the second photo to show that the inside of the "holes" were contiguous with the outside surface; it seems unlikely that someone made the happy face.
