Dryocopus pileatus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pileated_Wo...
Ivory-billed woodpecker is the largest woodpecker (19.5") and sadly disappearing. Pileated wood pecker (16.5") is the second largest.
This pileated woodpecker landed on an old maple tree. She spent over 30 minutes pecking and made a big hole. I was so excited to see this incredible giant.

Great series and video Rieko =D
@Jakubko. Thank you very much for your response. I am not sure if I am ready for my own mission. I was hoping that someone would create one for us ...
@S Frazier. I truly hope that Ivory-billed woodpecker are still somewhere on this earth. They are just extraordinary special birds.
Thank you so much MonaPirih. And welcome to Project Noah! I am so excited to see your wonderful spottings.
Hi Reiko! Sorry for the late response! You can start your own mission for woodpeckers locally, if you want!
There is sufficient evidence to believe/hope that the ivory-billed woodpecker still clings to existence that the USFWS made a recovery action plan http://www.fws.gov/ivorybill/
But the snake.... it's quite scary... It's amazing how the woody try protect her own, very brave. It's good video. Well done.
Love the video... very cool :)
Thank you very much J. I was so excited to see this incredible woodpecker so near. I wish I had better camera.... Someone suggested that there should be a "mission" for woodpecker. Can you do it for us?
Lovely spotting and video! It's amazing you got that close! I can never get closer than 100 feet!
Rieko, in 2011, a guy reported that he had spotted an ivory-billed woodpecker: http://io9.com/5797421/the-supposedly-ex... - this seems to be uncertain. There is research going on about them; see: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/ivory/
Thank you very much Maria dB. Would you know if Ivory-billed woodpecker completely disappeared? If so, pileated woodpecker would be the largest, correct? They are spectacular.
Cool spotting! I had one in my yard today and they make a lot of noise pecking away!
