nests of a weaver ant colony

Oecophylla smaragdina

Description:

This is a selection of nests from the same weaver ant colony. "Weaver ants are obligately arboreal and are known for their unique nest building behaviour where workers construct nests by weaving together leaves using larval silk. Colonies can be extremely large consisting of more than a hundred nests spanning numerous trees and contain more than half a million workers." This previous spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/149... is part of the same colony.

Habitat:

This spotting is in a small planted woodland of mostly exotic (Eucalyptus sp.) trees on the campus of a school which is nestled in the foothills of the Cyclops mountains. The campus is surrounded by villages, gardens and disturbed forest.
