Native Paper Wasp

Ropalidia romandi

Notes:

This small wasp is under 1cm long and has a red spot on its abdomen which flares in bright sunlight. These wasps have a powerful sting and are very aggressive if their nests are disturbed. Their papery nests are constructed by chewing weathered wood and mixing it with saliva. They are also good for the vegie patch as they feed their larvae chewed up caterpillars. They are regular visitors to our backyard pond.
