Chestnut Bolete

Gyroporus castaneus

Description:

Large mushroom with a chestnut brown cap and stem. The pores were white and did not bruise. Cap size was about 10cm diameter.

Habitat:

Growing alone in a grassy area bordering a mixed forest with lots of oak and pine.

Notes:

This mushroom is edible and is highly regarded for its nutty flavor when young. Although, it has been reported that a poisonous strain may exist, so extreme caution is recommended when tasting this mushroom.
