Western Grebe

Aechmophorus occidentalis

Description:

The size of a large duck, with long neck and long, sharp beak as shown. Marked boldly in black and white as shown, with red eye.

Habitat:

A large, scattered group of these birds was seen at sunset on a large, artificial lake. They came within about thirty yards of shore, but the fading light made clear images nearly impossible with my novice photo skills.

Notes:

These birds perform an astounding courtship dance during breeding season.
