Southern Flying Squirrel

Glaucomys volans

Description:

Southern flying squirrels have grey brown fur on top with darker flanks and are a cream color underneath. They have large dark eyes and a flattened tail

Habitat:

The southern flying squirrel is found in eastern deciduous forests or mixed forests of North America.

Notes:

I spotted this squirrel along the Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCWP) trail in the Piedmont NWR near Macon, GA. I had to use the flash in order to illuminate the interior of the RCWP nest/cavity inside of the longleaf pine tree.
