Ganoderma applanatum
A huge Ganoderma fungus, see last two photos for size comparison.
Susan, here is a Phellinus I have growing and it is about 35-40 cm in diameter. It exhibits the "burnt" qualities I was describing a few days ago:

Thanks again, Dane for the ID.
Susan, I'm not fully sure but from what I have seen of Phellinus species, they look a little more "burnt" for lack of a better word. I'll take a look at yours too. :-)
Phellinus igniarius vs Fomes fomentarius? I have a similar item I've been trying to identify. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/169...
Thanks Dane! I looked at the pictures on the internet and they are primarily hoof-shaped. Do you think it could be a more flat Ganoderma? Does Fomes fomentarius ever have a flat shape?
