Presbytis melalophos melalophos
Can you spot the baby in the first picture? Yellow-handed Mitered Langur (Presbytis melalophos melalophos), one of four subspecies of Sumatran Surili (Mitered Leaf-monkey), and known locally as "Simpai," in the Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia. http://www.theprimata.com/presbytis_mela...
Seen at the foot of Sumatra's Mt. Kerinci, the highest volcano in SE Asia, in the Kerinci Seblat National Park. Every part of Sumatra has a different subspecies of leaf monkey with varying coloration. 4 species and 21 subspecies throughout the island (according to the 1987 edition of The Ecology of Sumatra). http://i44.tinypic.com/343gbk7.jpg
As if greeting us, a large troop of leaf monkeys (Presbytis melalophos melalophos) came crashing through the trees directly above and all around us. It had just rained, and so as they flew overhead, droplets of water came splashing down on us. The monkeys bringing up the rear, the security for the troop, were loudly screeching as they went. It was quite a visceral experience. Notice the white baby in the first picture. Most (all?) species of leaf-monkey on Sumatra have babies that start out as white. I believe the monkey in the second picture is pregnant.
