Tobacco Hornworm

Manduca sexta

Description:

Approximately 4 inch long caterpillar. Green with brown strip down the top and a series of white diagonal stripes on its sides, one per segment on each side.

Notes:

Found in the morning, sunk to the bottom of a residential swimming pool. Appeared dead when fished out but 20 minutes later responded to touches by curling side to side.

This is one of the hornworms, possibly a Tobacco Hornworm. Often depicted as bright green, they also have a brown form.
