Gigartina circumcincta
Gigartina circumcincta leaf, spotted at Houghton bay, Wellington NZ. Plants can reach up to 90cm. When soaked in fresh water they produce a clear jelly which is used in food production as a gelling agent. The reproductive organs can form large pimple like structures on the blades of this seaweed. The blades can become large and leathery. Usually rich crimson but fades to a pinkish-green. http://www.otago.ac.nz/marinestudies/dat...
