Male Gelada Baboon

Theropithecus gelada

Description:

The gelada is large and robust. It is covered with buff to dark brown, coarse hair and has a dark face with pale eyelids. Its arms and feet are nearly black. Its short tail ends in a tuft of hair. Adult males have a long, heavy cape of hair on their backs.

Habitat:

We spent nearly one hour with the Geladas in the Semien Mountains, north of Ethiopia. The Gelada Baboon can be found in the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea, the especially Semien Mountains National Park in Ethiopia. They live in small harems, consisting of one male, several females and the young Geladas. The small harems join together to feed and the numbers of the total number of Geladas can go as high as 670! The Gelada prefers to sleep on rocky cliffs.
