White Hawk?

Unknown

Description:

It appears to be a hawk, but I have never seen one with a white head. It does have a brown tail, so it could be a young hawk. Anyone care to identify?

Habitat:

Top of trees

Notes:

Flew into our neighborhood, and noticed it because it was mostly white. When it flew off it seemed like a hawk, and may be a young one, since it didn't really have the confidence of flying.

So I think the Mississippi Kite is here to stay for a while, as we spotted two today (most likely nesting pairs). So as I was taking a picture of it high on top of the tree in my backyard, my said that a humming bird is in the bottle brush, when I turned my camera to take a picture the humming bird flew towards us, as did the kite, grabbing the humming bird in flight a few feet off the top of our heads. It flew to a branch in a tall tree and feasted on the humming bird. My wife was horrified, but I was amazed. The kites remained for most of the day circling above our house. Pretty amazing.

Just so you know, by putting any text in the scientific name field, you indicate in the system that this spotting is identified. If you need help IDing something, then leave that field blank and simply tick the "Help me ID this species" box. That way people looking to help others ID things will see it and can help you. Welcome to Project Noah by the way! Take a look at our FAQ, it's really helpful to see how the site works, and let us know if you have any questions :) www.projectnoah.org/faq
