Midnight Purplewing

Eunica norica

Description:

A medium to small butterfly. The forewing was soot black on top and the hind wing was soot black forward and iridescent blue posteriorly. I believe the underside was a drab combination of black and cream colored spots and swirls.

Habitat:

This butterfly was seen on the ground in a clearing alongside a runway in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

One of the incredible butterflies of the Amazon that shows iridescent blue color.

Wow. As Sukanya intimated, "You're the man." Perfect match. Thanks much. I hope you can help me identify more of these beautiful creatures.

Thanks. I'm sure someone will recognize it. If not, that is pretty cool too. Means its not common

I know what you mean. Hopefully ID help will be coming your way. I love these kind of pictures sometimes - away from distractions. Giving the subject complete detail and attention. Great shot of this beauty.

It really was. I thought it was unique enough I would be able to find an identifying picture, but too many butterflies in the Amazon. Thanks.
