Cattle Egret

Bubulcus ibis

Description:

Order: Pelecaniformes Family: Ardeidae These egrets along with other wading bird species come to this park every year (around May-June) to nest. Why? They actually use the alligators as protection to avoid raccoons from eating their eggs. So smart. They nest in multi-species colonies. They are native to Africa, but arrived in South America in around the 1880s and moved north to the U.S.

Habitat:

Highly adaptable to a variety of habitats. This contains palms, oaks, and cypress trees.

Notes:

Picture was taken at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, St. Augustine, FL.
