Common Checkered Whiptail

Aspidoscelis tesselata

Description:

A slender lizard with a very long tail and checkered dorsal pattern. Spots or "checkers" are usually black. Limbs and face are lightly colored. Ventral side is also lightly colored. Tails are usually spotted. All individuals of this lizard species are female. Reproduction occurs via parthenogenesis. I have had the good fortune of assisting with the capture of these lizards for research in the past but this time, this gal was found near my front door. After taking a few photos of her, I released her into the desert next door to my house.

Habitat:

Chihuahuan desert.
