Lark sparrow

Chondestes grammacus

Description:

I spotted this lark sparrow during my visit through South Dakota. This is a first spotting for me of a lark sparrow. This sparrow has a long, rounded tail with prominent white corners. The adult has a distinctive harlequin face pattern of black, white, and chestnut. Bright white underparts marked only with dark central breast spot.

Habitat:

Prairies, roadsides, farms, open woodlands. This sparrow was spotted in on open field near the campground in the Badlands of South Dakota.
