Trichosurus vulpecula
"Light grey fur with white underparts and a black, bushy tail. Brushtails have large pointed ears like a cat's. Females have a pouch to carry their young. Adult males may have reddish fur on their chest which has been stained by their scent gland." - ABC
Suburban back yard (and roof cavities!!)
This cute pest has just removed a board off the side of the house and made home inside the walls. The wars begin again. These are protected species even though there are millions in the suburbs :-( All we can do is try to out-smart them at night time. They are quite cute though especially the tiny ones which ride around on their mothers back. They are not the least bit threatened by introduced predators like foxes, cats or dogs. Widespread throughout the treed parts of Australia and similar in New Guinea. Introduced to NZ and now an out-of-control pest.

Thanks Seema. I wish I COULD capture it .
nice captures
Well, I guess you will have plenty of photo opportunities then!
Look at that tail! I'd so love to cuddle one, but have seen the damage they can do with those claws :/ Great spotting Argy!
I was surprised to read that they are a pest because it looked so cute! People in my area that have issues with racoons often trap and release, maybe that could be an option for this guy?
Oh really! remind me of Toque macaques in Sri lanka. they even rob food from the kitchen if left open :-)
Nuwan it's always brushtail season here. Since they became protected they are taking over everything here. They thrive in the middle of the biggest cities, tearing off the lids of rubbish bins, scaring big dogs... every house would probably have 2 or 3. Hitchcock would make a movie about them.
looks like it's Brushtail season in Australia, Shanna has also spotted one
