The dark brown huhu is an endemic species of longhorn beetle found in New Zealand. They fly mainly at night and spotted this one on a garden seat where it landed with a thud at 9.58pm after being attracted by the porch light. It measured 43mm but they can grow to 50mm in length.

We found one of these in our sink this morning. We have fly screens so I have to wonder how such a large insect managed to get into the house. I didn't measure it (there's no way I am going to handle something capable of biting!) but it would have been at least 43mm, and possibly longer. My husband took it outside.
