Bison antiquus
I was thrilled to see this nice size herd of American bison (or buffalo) on the grasslands of Custer State Park in Custer, South Dakota. Bison once covered the Great Plains in enormous herds in North America. During the 19th century, settlers killed some 50 million bison for food and sport. They were reduced to only a few hundred animals. Today, bison numbers have rebounded and about 200,000 bison live on preserves and ranches.
