Black Vulture

Coragyps atratus

Description:

The black vulture is a huge bird with black feathers and a charcoal colored head. These two were perched preening and zipping their feathers. My guess they were cleaning themselves after a meal. They feed on carrion which is dead things and are natures cleanup crew. They are often seen soaring in the air with wings in a slight U shape.

Habitat:

open areas, some woodland.
