American Carrion Beetle

Necrophila americana

Description:

Black beetle that appears to have armor. The top, front side of the beetle has a yellow area with a black spot in the middle. Adults are about 11 to 22 mm long.

Habitat:

Typically found around a rotting carcass. This one was found in the midlands of South Carolina near a deciduous forest. Nearby is a large cattle farm.

Notes:

This one was observed on rotting watermelon that was put out to attract butterflies.
