Bucephala clangula
Male Common Goldeneye, aka diving ducks, flying over the open river
Open areas of water on the Otter Tail River
Dams along the Otter Tail River have really helped keep the water on the river open this year after a sever drought which dropped or lowered our water levels thus making areas that have normally stayed open all winter, freeze over completely. These diving ducks, as well as other waterfowl that live on freshwater flora, would not be here this winter I believe if not for the dams. There's something about these little ducks that always puts a smile on my face. I admire their strength, determination and what appears playfulness in extremely cold weather and wind chill factors. The males make me think of penguins with their coloration and playful antics. I'll see if I can shoot some video of these guys as pictures really do not do their personalities justice.
