Longhorn beetle

Family Cerambycidae, Hedypathes betulinus

Description:

It belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Cerambycidae, popularly known as Corinthians (because its colors resembles a popular soccer team uniform colors). It is regarded as a major pest of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis). The adults have white color, with dark designs on prothorax and elytra, females perform their postures in crevices in the bark, depositing an egg in each branch. They drill the branches and trunks of plants, and have a long life cycle. Its main damage is the construction of galleries that prevent the circulation of the sap, reducing the flow of sap, plus annular galleries at the base of trunks that can cause death and toppling of the trees.

Fun fact! Beetles account for almost 25% of all known life forms, and 40% of all described insect species. You check out the incredible diversity of this order (Coleoptera) here - http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/1150...

Of course I trust you, Bayucca, I always do. As you can see, I even updated the info about the beetle, including that it is a great plague of Ilex paraguariensis. I really thought I had updated its scientific name, but somehow I didn't. Thank you for making me notice it.
