A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Amblyomma americanum
It's been a "good" year for ticks. Populations of deer and dog ticks have been ridiculous and lone star ticks were not an exception. This one I found after a day of field research. He was dug into my calf, but once I started taking pictures he quickly popped his head out. These seem to be smaller than most other tick species. They are vectors of the bacteria that cause Lyme disease and cause you to develop an allergy to red meat along with several other deadly diseases.
Commonly found in grassy areas.
