Common Snapping Turtle

Chelydra serpentina

Description:

What I believe to be a female, Common Snapping Turtle that has come out of the freshwater lake to find a place to lay her eggs

Habitat:

100+ feet away from a freshwater lake, near a gravel road surrounded by woods

Notes:

Having trouble uploading videos here from You Tube so here's the link to the video I shot of this bulldozer of a Snapping Turtle: http://youtu.be/w6HvS1ZdnAw When we came upon her she was just off a gravel road laying in sand/gravel, not moving. When we first saw her I thought perhaps she was hurt or had been hit by a car. We stopped the car on the road and I saw her barely turn her head towards us. At this point I took a couple pictures before switching to video but stayed in the car the whole time. Later, just down the same road we came across another extremely large female Snapping Turtle next to the road. We hadn't passed them on our way up a few hours earlier so I'm not sure if they had just got there or were already done laying their eggs and were resting prior to heading back to the lake.
