Dark-spotted Tiger Moth

Spilosoma canescens ( Ardices canescens)

Description:

A beautiful white moth about 25mm long. Antennae were black. Legs appeared to have dense pinkish red setae. White wings were tented up over the abdomen. They had dark markings in a distinctive pattern - these patches on the wings could have been translucent because they appeared to have a pink tinge with the colour of the red abdomen coming through.

Habitat:

Spotted at night on a lily leaf - school grounds -under bright light

Notes:

These moths are from the family Arctiidae and are are seen all through eastern Australia. The larvae feed on a variety of plant species ( see web link) I flew in one last week (plane) and I found one (moth) this week !! Also known as Light Ermine Moth These Australian moths are now placed under Genus Ardices (2005). So this could be A.canescens. Awaiting confirmation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ardices_can...
