Common sawfly

Dolerus sp.

Description:

Roughly 10 millimeters in length, dull black. Wings clear to hazy gray with distinct black veins.

Habitat:

Back yard in a suburban residential neighborhood in a small town on the western fringe of the eastern deciduous forest.

Notes:

This is a female and she subsequently oviposited in a plant in the "lawn." These are common, early spring insects.
