Velvet Mite

Eutrombidium sp.

Description:

Bright red, velvety arthropod with eight legs. About 0.2 - 0.6 inches in length. Mobile and active. Post-larval stages can be differentiated from all other terrestrial parasitengones by the presence of a posterio-dorsal sclerite... clearly visible in most photographs.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest in the midlands of South Carolina. Photographed at Stevens Creek Heritage Preserve near Clarks Hill (McCormick County), SC.

Notes:

Crawling on a downed, decaying pine tree. Thanks to AntónioGinjaGinja for identification. Confirmed on BugGuide by Heather Proctor as Eutrombidium sp.
