Buteo jamaicensis
Hawk with a brownish/reddish head, brown streaks in breast and belly feathers, yellow legs and feet, and white underparts.
I saw this hawk sitting in a tree on the edge of a parking lot for a busy shopping plaza. It was a freezing cold day, and this bird really stood out in an urban landscape.
That band of dark streaks across the middle is a distinctive characteristic of Red-tailed Hawks. It contrasts well with the white feathers high of the breast and sometimes these birds look like they are wearing a white ascot.
