This small bird has a gray back, whitish underparts, and a conspicuous black cap and chin. The Carolina Chickadee is similar in appearance and behavior to the more widespread black capped chickadee, but the Carolina Chickadee is slightly smaller and more dully colored. Size: 4.75 inches.
This chickadee occurs in deciduous and mixed deciduous-coniferous woodlands and swamps.
This species typically takes insects from foliage and tree bark.
