Ornate Hydriris Moth

Hydriris ornatalis

Description:

Dark brown moth, about 12-14mm wingspan. Wings have metallic wavy patterns on them. Hydriris ornatalis (Duponchel, 1832), the Ornate Hydriris, is a moth of the Crambidae family. It has a wide distribution and is known from southern Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and North America, where it is restricted to Florida. The wingspan is about 16 mm. The larvae feed on Convolvulaceae species, including Ipomoea aquatica. Hydriris Meyrick, 1885, is a genus of pyraloid moths. Sometimes placed in the subfamily Spilomelinae of family Crambidae, it is assigned to subfamily Glaphyriinae by other authors.

Habitat:

Backyard garden, spotted on ceiling of the garage.
