Mistletoe germinating

Description:

I found these attached to a metal mesh fence. It looks like a seed sprouting but I couldn't find the plant or tree where they came from. About 10 mm long.

Habitat:

Semi tropical.

This is so neat! I never would have known this was mistletoe and I grew up with lots of it in California.

Best guess for this would be the seed of some kind of Mistletoe germinating. The fruits tend to be very sticky which forces birds to literally wipe their behinds on something to remove them when they defacate! More often than not they will wipe on a branch and if it's the right species, when they germinate a penetrating organ called a haustorium will venture into the host to draw water and nutrients from it. In this case (if I'm right) it is not going to have much luck with a metal fence!
