Black-shouldered Spinylegs

Dromogomphus spinosus

Description:

Black shoulders; dorsal thorax has a light green I-shaped mark with pale ovals on either side; terminal segments form a club with yellow lateral markings. Adults average 2.5 inches long Adult males of this species is notable for its long back legs, which have long spines, green eyes and face, pale green thorax on mature individuals, and broad black shoulder stripes. Female and immature male Black-Shouldered Spinylegs have yellow markings instead of pale green markings. Females have a barely clubbed tip of the abdomen.

Habitat:

Range. From southern Manitoba to the east coast of the US as far south as Florida Flight dates: Late May to early September May be found at forest edges near streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. These dragonflies may perch on the leaves of larger plants, or on the ground. They often prefer shady perches.

This is an immature male.
